MICROBIALS: Direct Use of Micro Organisms
CHF 2 million p.a. for innovative projects dealing with the direct use of modified or domesticated micro-organisms. With its initiative, Gebert Rüf Stiftung seeks to jumpstart this underdeveloped field and to generate a significant impact by fostering the widespread use of microbial resources. The focus is on applications in human and veterinary medicine, the environment, energy production, water treatment, food science and other areas.
Complex organisms such as humans can be considered as giant super-organisms, since the human body carries trillions of microbes. The same level of complexity is found in animals, soil and water, where highly diversified microbial populations play essential roles.
