Fourth Robotics and ROS in Zurich Meetup

On Wednesday’s evening, 16th of October we attended a 4th Robotics and ROS in Zurich meetup. I was our first meetup after the summer break. This time, it was co-organized by ICCLab and ANYbotics. ANYbotics provided their office space for the meeting and demo. We managed to gather together around 50 interested attendees.

Everything started with a short introduction talk and agenda presentation by Giovanni Toffetti. After that, the ANYbotics team gave a 30min long presentation about their flagship robot – ANYmal C.

ANYmal C legged robot presentation

Peter Frankhauser, the CBDO of ANYbotics, started by explaining the current state of the art of mobile robots and presenting possible paths where the robotic industry is going to expand in the future. He showed that by analyzing the history of the mobile robotics industry we can spot a transition from robots performing repetitive tasks (automation), started by the third industrial revolution in late 60s, to autonomous robots used to operate in large storehouses (logistics). The autonomy of logistic robots is somehow limited only to controlled environments, so by drawing a trend line, we can spot the next breakthrough waiting to be reached by mobile robots: the possibility to operate autonomously in “robot unfriendly” environment. The use-case presented by ANYbotics team is the task of routine inspections in places like offshore power plants or oil platforms. Later on, two engineers from ANYbotics, took over the presentation and dived more deeply into technical details about how they managed to adapt their robot to harsh environment and what kind of challenges they faced.

Third Robotics and ROS in Zürich Meetup

The third robotics and ROS in Zürich meetup was organized and hosted by ICCLab on June 19th 2019. There was a good turnout from representatives in both academia and industry, totaling about 25 people in attendance. For our third meetup we had two presentations: “Perception and action planning in complex environments with ROS” by Rastislav Marko and Martin Möller from F&P Personal Robotics and “Self-calibrating camera position and grasping with Niryo arm” by Dimitrios Dimopoulos from ICCLab, ZHAW.

Martin Möller opened the first talk with a brief introduction of the company and one of its collaborations with ZHAW in the past. Next an overview of the hardware components of P-Rob 2R was given. This robot lies at the heart of the company’s solutions, including Lio, a mobile service robot, which was the focus of the talk. Following that, myP, the core robot library with its accompanying graphical control interface, was presented in action and a quick look at its architecture and configuration was showcased. Finally, Martin mentioned the key sensor components used by the mobile service robot.

First Robotics and ROS in Zürich Meetup

ICCLab organized the first robotics and ROS meetup in Zürich on April 9th 2019. There was a good turnout from representatives in both academia and industry, totaling almost 60 people in attendance. This meetup is the first of hopefully many that we intend to organize, as part of our effort to build a local network of ROS users across many robotic disciplines. Besides networking, our goal for these meetups is to also provide a platform for individuals to share and teach specific robotics/ROS knowledge. For this initial meetup we had two presentations: vision for navigation in autonomous robotics, and ROS applications at ICCLab.

Nearly 60 attendees were present at the first robotics and ROS in Zürich meetup.

15th OpenStack Meetup

On the 21st of March we held the 15th OpenStack meetup. As ever, the talks were interesting, relevant and entertaining. It was kindly sponsored by Rackspace and held at their offices in Zürich. Much thanks goes to them and to previous sponsors!

At this meetup there were 2 talks and an interactive and impromptu panel discussion on the recent operator’s meetup in Milan.

The first talk was by Giuseppe Paterno who shared the experience in eBay on the workloads that are running there upon OpenStack.

Next up was Geoff Higginbottom from Rackspace who showed how to use Nagios and StackStorm to automate the recovery of OpenStack services. This was interesting from the lab’s perspective as much of what Geoff talked about was related to our Cloud Incident Management initiative. You can see almost the same talk that Geoff gave at the OpenStack Nordic Days.

The two presentations were followed up by the panel discussion involving those that attended  including our own Seán Murphy and was moderated by Andy Edmonds. Finally, as is now almost a tradition, we had a very nice apero!

Looking forward to the next and 16th OpenStack meetup!

SDN beyond OpenFlow – spotlight of the 7th SDN workshop in Switzerland

Last week we organised the 7th SDN workshop with our collaborators and co-organisers SWITCH at their own premises in Zurich. The bi-annual workshop was the 2nd in the series of this year’s workshop. Wondering why the 7th SDN workshop took place for only half a day? So did we with our co-organiser SWITCH, before we got to know it was a public holiday in many Swiss cantons 🙂

Nonetheless and as usual, it brought high quality speakers and talks in a relaxed atmosphere of discussions and debates. What follows is a short recap of the presentations, as usual for those who missed the event.

SDN/NFV Paradigm: Where the Industry meets the Academia

After 7 months, Service Engineering and SWITCH are back with the regular Swiss SDN workshops, this time held on 16th of June at the ZHAW premises in Winterthur. For the 6th time, the Software Defined Networking (SDN) community from Switzerland and abroad (represented by the industry and the academia), embarked on a joint SDN-NFV full-day journey to discuss SDN, present the best practices and prototypes and share the know-how and some demonstrations of their recent research activities. As a novelty this time, the SDN workshop/meetup was collocated with the Open Cloud Day, allowing for broader attendance from participants in both events. Regular attendees and new fellows could be spot on site engaged in interesting discussions. You can find the through report of the event here from our collaborator SWITCH and i leave you below the complete list of the SDN track. The complete presentations repository could be found here. Enjoy and see you in the next events!

Our past recent events – Docker & Cloud Foundry meetups

I’m happy to say that this year has started with a lot of energy in terms of tech events in Switzerland. January was a little quiet, with people slowly recovering from the Christmas and New Years festivities. But come February, Zurich was a very busy location with several meetups happening every week.

We also took this opportunity to get back into organising our meetups. Last week, on 17th of February we organised the 6th Docker Switzerland User Group’s meetup. The meetup was held in the premises of DeinDeal, a Swiss online shopping platform and coupons offering company, in Zurich. The meetup turned out to be quite good. More than 70 people turned up at DeinDeal’s office. There were 3 talks in total held and all of them delighted the participants with a demo about their coolness in using Docker.  Continue reading

5th Swiss SDN Workshop highlights

Last Friday, 13th November the 5th SDN workshop took place at the SWITCH premises in Zurich. With 9 presentations covering different aspects of Software Defined Networking and around 40 attendees, we are happy to bring together the academia and industry partners on the same table in order to provide to the community a complete overview of the most recent results, products and open source SDN solutions.

Compared with the previous workshops, talks from the industry were prevalent this time, which brought variety but most importantly an intent to close the gap between SDN research projects and grand-scale solutions based on customer use cases.
