The ECRP project combines cutting edge robotics technology from Rapyuta Robotics (RR), an ETH Zurich spinoff, and novel cloud development from the Service Prototyping (SPLab) and InIT Cloud Computing Lab (ICCLab) at ZHAW.
With ICCLab, RR will transform its existing open source robotics platform from a prototype to a full-fledged cloud-native enterprise ecosystem for third-party applications combining physical devices with cloud-hosted functionality.
RR and ZHAW have agreed to release this work as open source software (OSS), under the label Rapyuta Core.
In a previous series of blog posts (1, 2, 3), we have discussed how to install Monasca to monitor OpenStack, how to create alarms based on specific events happening in the monitored system, and how to setup notifications when any of these alarms are triggered.
Going further, in the context of the Cloud Orchestration initiative and the Hurtle framework, we go further by using Monasca to detect events in orchestrated applications and perform callbacks to the orchestrator so it can react to events. The motivation behind this is provide hurtle with processes able to perform continuous health management of any orchestrated application.
While initially designed to monitor the Cloud itself, it is easy to install the monasca agent on any platform, making it simple to monitor deployed VMs behaviour. Continue reading
Three ICCLab members were in sunny Würzburg for the ACROSS COST action meeting last week. ACROSS stands for “Autonomous Control for a Reliable Internet of Services” and our own TMB is a member of the management committee (MC) for Switzerland.
For those of you unfamiliar with COST actions, they are an instrument for research funding from the EU that provides networking opportunities for researchers.
The meeting was spread over three days with:
- The 1st ACROSS Open Workshop on Autonomous Control for the Internet of Services on Tuesday;
- Task forces and Management Committee on Wednesday;
- Plenary and work group meetings on Thursday.
The keynote speakers for the workshop gave motivating talks that spawned interesting discussions on autonomous control spanning multiple domains including mobile, compute, and application-level quality of experience (QoE). The keynote speakers were: Marco Hoffmann from Nokia Networks, Thomas Zinner from Würzburg University, and Maris van Sprang from IBM.
ICClab’s Giovanni Toffetti (that’s me!) gave a talk on the Mobile Cloud Networking (MCN) project motivation and architecture. Here are the slides I used for the talk: MCN-Vision-Scope-Architecture.
