SPLab Colloquium on Robust Modern API Design

by Josef Spillner

In the second invited talk in our colloquium series in 2018, Alan Sill from Texas Tech University’s Cloud and Autonomic Computing Center shared his views on how to manage data centres the right way. In the talk «Topics in robust modern API design for data center control and scientific applications», many issues were pointed out whose proper solution will effect the whole cloud stack up to the way cloud-native applications are designed and equipped with deep self-management capabilities. Both the talk and the mixed-in debates are captured by this blog post.

Paraguayan Perspective on Cloud Applications

by Josef Spillner

The Itaipu Technology Park (PTI) in Paraguay, founded in 2009, is involved with scientific and technological development which contributes positively to regional development. Several of its centres with a total number of 90 engineers and researchers put emphasis on ICT integration and the challenges connected with it. Among them are diverse plans to use cloud applications. In this context, the Service Prototyping Lab of Zurich University of Applied Sciences (SPLab) in Switzerland is conducting a two-week guest lecturing and research exchange presenting its research initiatives and outputs on the PTI premises in close proximity to Ciudad del Este.

Global ICT Module: Swiss Students in China

by Josef Spillner

chinesearchitectureSupported by Huawei’s Seeds for the Future programme, 16 students from Swiss universities of applied sciences are spending a couple of education and project days at production and research facilities in China which cover the broad topics of telecommunications equipment, enterprise computing solutions and mobile handhelds. Among the participants, two study Computer Science and Business Information Technology, respectively, at Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). Their study programmes are complemented well by the technical and business contents of this on-site module.

GUI for Netfloc – An OpenSource SDK for SDN

Inside the Software Defined Networking initiative we are developing a Software Development Kit for SDN, called Netfloc.

NETwork FLOws for Clouds (Netfloc) is a programmable framework solution for software defined datacenter networks. It leverages network management by offering to the network developers a set of libraries packed as Java bundles for the OpenDaylight controller. Netfloc also exposes REST API abstractions and Java interfaces to enable optimal integration in cloud datacenters and customized end-to-end management of OpenFlow equipment. For references and current status, please feel free to visit the Github repository. We will come back with a detailed post on the SDK very soon, so stay tuned.

And yes being the networking guys, we are mainly dealing with command line management in the whole process of development and testing. But only until to date, when we realized that it is time to think as well of the UX side and start a design process for a graphical user interface (GUI) for Netfloc.
