As part of the research of INE for the EU-project METPEX the different mobility patterns of demographic groups have been analysed. Individuals over 65 years old report the lowest daily travel distances, travel times and share of days undertaking a trip.
The main reason for this reduced mobility is the retirement of the work market, what causes a less necessity to leave residence places for daily commuting (see figure below). Health issues, such as disabilities or sickness, are also relevant, especially for people over 80. These health issues might be the reason for the high sensibility of seniors to weather conditions.
