The mobility patterns of the different age groups in Switzerland have been investigated in the METPEX project giving as a result the figure below. Modal choice is a crucial mobility pattern that indicates the sustainability in terms of transport.
The highest car modal shares are reported in ages between 25-44 as well as 44-64 (both above 40%). In contrast, underage and senior citizens are more dependent of non-motorized modes (walking and cycling) as well as of public transport. The walking modal share of people over 65 years old reaches almost 50% and over 80 years old 60%. The high levels public transport use and walking (as egress mode) in senior citizens support the reduction of barriers that hinder the mobility of this sensible age group.
