Demographic ageing – a future challenge in Switzerland

The population in Switzerland has been growing since the 1960s and a demographic change has started taking place. By 2010 the younger age groups had lost some of their shares to the seniors and the baby boomers became middle-aged. The life expectancy has been continuously increasing and the elderly are becoming healthier and more active, which leads to new types of mobility needs. At the same time the birth rates in Switzerland are decreasing and by 2050 the older age groups (>65 years) are expected to increase their shares to 30%. In 1960 the share of elderly was only 10%.
