INE participates in the EU-project METPEX. METPEX has a goal to develope a measurement tool to evaluate the quality of travel experience. A part of the project is leaded by INE (Work Package 6) and studies the land use factors associated with accessibility. The hypothesis of the project is that the lower the accessibility traveling by a transport mode or reaching the mode, the lower the travel satisfaction. In order to map the likely interrelations between land use, accessibility and mobility behaviour (as measurable consequence of satisfaction) Deliverable D6.2 has carried out an extensive literature review and the figure below summarizes one of the results.
According to existing literature, high population density, land use diversity and street connectivity (e.g. 4-way intersections density) are associated with shorter average distances to all destinations by car. High population density was also found in areas with short public transport distances. Moreover, population density, job density, land use diversity and street connectivity are associated with lower car use and higher public transport and active modal shares.
