The map below was created by the Institute of Sustainable Development (INE) and shows the average allowed driving speed for the greater Zurich area in Switzerland. In this case it is not the actual average speed of the car drivers, but the average speed limits in the municipalities. The higher the general speed limits, the higher the average speed.
It is no surprise that the average speed is higher around the highways and low in the city centres of Winterthur (Northeast) and Zurich (Middle). The corridors between the bigger cities have a width of several postal code areas and can be recognised on the map. In these corridors a higher speed limit has been observed. One reason could be that more streets with a higher speed limit are needed to handle the daily flow of goods and people.
