We at ZAV investigate the urban climate and potential measures to mitigate the increasingly high temperatures within the urban heat island. Zurich&#8217;s dense <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/metenvia\/2020\/06\/02\/high-resolution-t-rh-measurement-network-for-zurich\/\">urban measurement network<\/a> provides an ideal dataset for comparison with and validation of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/metenvia\/2022\/03\/15\/urban-climate-simulating-the-effect-of-building-orientation-on-cold-air-streams\/\">modelling studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My current tool of choice is the urban Large Eddy Simulation model: PALM-4U. LES is capable to resolve the flow around buildings, even considering the buoyancy effects of hot air rising and colder, denser air sinking. This is relevant for processes such as cold air drainage from the nearby hills into the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"446\" height=\"446\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/metenvia\/files\/2023\/06\/umstroemung_hochhaus_small.gif.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1795\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Streamlines of the air circulation around a high-rise building (Hardau, ~95m). The height\/z-axis is compressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For the event &#8220;Green Bytes \u2013 Wie gr\u00fcn kann Technologie sein?&#8221; of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dizh.ch\">Digitalization Initiative of the Zurich Higher Education Institutions (DIZH)<\/a> we created a short animation comparing the modelled urban temperature distribution to measurements.
