Preliminary data shows that the event was probably the largest volcanic eruption since the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. It was so powerful that the shock wave completely circled the globe &#8211; multiple times! This was also recorded by our meteorological measuring instruments on the roof of the ZHAW building in Winterthur as well as of our temporary station installed in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/metenvia\/status\/1458562327721218055?cxt=HHwWjsC4qbKt7b0oAAAA\" target=\"_blank\">Appenzell<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"918\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/metenvia\/files\/2022\/01\/Hunga_tonga-1024x918.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1047\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/metenvia\/files\/2022\/01\/Hunga_tonga-1024x918.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/metenvia\/files\/2022\/01\/Hunga_tonga-300x269.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/metenvia\/files\/2022\/01\/Hunga_tonga-768x688.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/metenvia\/files\/2022\/01\/Hunga_tonga-676x606.png 676w, https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/metenvia\/files\/2022\/01\/Hunga_tonga.png 1279w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Fig.1 Air pressure (QNH) on the roof of the TS building of the ZHAW in Winterthur and at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kaltluftseen.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\">kaltluftseen.ch<\/a> measuring station at S\u00e4mtisersee from 15.01.2022 at 18:00 h until 16.01.2022 06:00 h.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after 8 PM (19:00 UTC), the first shock wave reached Switzerland from the North (shortest distance between Tonga and Switzerland). Within a few minutes, the pressure rose by more than 1 hPa and then immediately dropped by about 3 hPa before rising again to about the same level as in the beginning (Figure 1). The first shock wave thus reached us a little more than 15 hours after the eruption, which means that the shock wave travelled at a speed higher than 1000 km\/h. The second shock wave, travelling via the South Pole, was recorded after 2 AM that night.
