{"id":9227,"date":"2016-02-02T08:47:53","date_gmt":"2016-02-02T06:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/icclab\/?p=9227"},"modified":"2018-01-09T10:20:40","modified_gmt":"2018-01-09T08:20:40","slug":"wanted-rd-engineer-for-cloud-storage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/icclab\/wanted-rd-engineer-for-cloud-storage\/","title":{"rendered":"Wanted: Senior Researcher \/ Researcher for Cloud Storage Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><b>Job Description<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Service Engineering (SE, blog.zhaw.ch\/icclab) group at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) \/ Institute of Applied Information Technology (InIT) in Switzerland is seeking applications for a full-time position at its Winterthur facility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The successful candidate will work in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">InIT Cloud Computing Lab (ICCLab) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lead <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the research <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">initiative on advanced cloud storage architectures, see <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/icclab\/cloud-storage\/\">Cloud Storage Initiative.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Comprehensive responsibility is provided with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">driving the cloud storage research agenda <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and the respective team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the academic, industry, and technology landscape, identify unsolved problems and propose novel ideas for future activities. Particular emphasis is given to developing prototypes, operation of novel systems and architectures, and assessing their performance. The position will also involve publishing, for example by writing publications, contributing to standards, presenting at developer meetups, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Particular knowledge in the following areas is appreciated:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Architecture of Openstack systems <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OpenStack components including Swift, Cinder and Keystone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Advanced distributed storage systems (Ceph, Gluster etc)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Storage file system technologies (eg ZFS)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Docker and container technologies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Object Storage systems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">RESTful storage interfaces (Amazon S3 APIs, Swift APIs)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The candidate will have the opportunity to establish partnerships with industrial partners, akquire funding for collaborative research, and to devise and transfer research solutions to enterprise contexts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>General Candidate Profile<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Applicants must have a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PhD or Master <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">degree in Computer Science and ideally 2-3 years of professional experience. Knowledge of English is a prerequisite, German a plus but not required. A healthy research curiosity combined with very good software development skills and an interest in novel technologies is expected, as is a demonstrated ability to work in an R&amp;D context.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A level of ambition and a willingness to take ownership and responsibility is very well considered.
