{"id":5099,"date":"2014-06-04T17:45:24","date_gmt":"2014-06-04T15:45:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/icclab\/?p=5099"},"modified":"2014-06-10T11:57:39","modified_gmt":"2014-06-10T09:57:39","slug":"ceph-osd-down-and-out-of-the-cluster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/icclab\/ceph-osd-down-and-out-of-the-cluster\/","title":{"rendered":"Ceph: OSD &#8220;down&#8221; and &#8220;out&#8221; of the cluster &#8211; An obvious case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When <a title=\"Deploy Ceph and start using it: end to end tutorial \u2013 Installation (part 1\/3)\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/icclab\/deploy-ceph-and-start-using-it-end-to-end-tutorial-installation-part-13\/\">setting up a cluster with ceph-deploy<\/a>, just after the\u00a0<code>ceph-deploy osd activate<\/code>\u00a0phase and the distribution of keys, the OSDs should be both &#8220;up&#8221; and &#8220;in&#8221;\u00a0the cluster.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that is not mentioned in the <a href=\"http:\/\/ceph.com\/docs\/firefly\/start\/quick-ceph-deploy\/\">quick-install documentation with ceph-deploy<\/a>\u00a0or the OSDs <a href=\"https:\/\/ceph.com\/docs\/master\/rados\/operations\/monitoring-osd-pg\/\">monitoring<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/ceph.com\/docs\/master\/rados\/troubleshooting\/troubleshooting-osd\/#osd-not-running\">troubleshooting<\/a> page\u00a0(or at least I didn&#8217;t find it), is that, upon (re-)boot, mounting the storage volumes to the mount points that ceph-deploy prepares is up to the administrator (check <a href=\"http:\/\/lists.ceph.com\/pipermail\/ceph-users-ceph.com\/2013-June\/002098.html\">this discussion<\/a> on the Ceph mailing list).<\/p>\n<p>So, after a reboot of my storage nodes, the Ceph cluster couldn&#8217;t reach a healthy state showing the following OSD tree:<\/p>\n<pre>$ ceph osd tree\r\n# id weight type name up\/down reweight\r\n-1 3.64 root default\r\n    -2 1.82 host ceph-osd0\r\n        0 0.91 osd.0 down 0\r\n        1 0.91 osd.1 down 0\r\n    -3 1.82 host ceph-osd1\r\n        2 0.91 osd.2 down 0\r\n        3 0.91 osd.3 up 1\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t thinking about mounting the drives, as this process was hidden to me during the initial installation, but a simple <code>mount<\/code> command would have immediately unveiled the mistery :D.<\/p>\n<p>So, the simple solution was to mount the devices:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo mount \/dev\/sd&lt;XY&gt; \/var\/lib\/ceph\/osd\/ceph-&lt;K&gt;\/\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>and then to start the OSD daemons:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo start ceph-osd id=&lt;K&gt;\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>For some other troubleshooting hints\u00a0for Ceph, you may look at this <a title=\"Deploy Ceph and start using it: end to end tutorial \u2013 Troubleshooting (part 2\/3)\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/icclab\/deploy-ceph-troubleshooting-part-23\/\">page<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When setting up a cluster with ceph-deploy, just after the\u00a0ceph-deploy osd activate\u00a0phase and the distribution of keys, the OSDs should be both &#8220;up&#8221; and &#8220;in&#8221;\u00a0the cluster.
