{"id":4493,"date":"2013-04-02T10:21:23","date_gmt":"2013-04-02T08:21:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/icclab\/?p=4493"},"modified":"2014-09-29T09:52:53","modified_gmt":"2014-09-29T07:52:53","slug":"distributed-file-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.zhaw.ch\/icclab\/distributed-file-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Distributed File Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Description<\/h2>\n<p>Distributed File Systems are file systems that allow access to files from multiple hosts via a computer network, making it possible for multiple users on multiple machines to share files and storage resources.<\/p>\n<p>Distributed File Systems are designed to be &#8220;transparent&#8221; in a number of aspects (e.g.: location, concurrency, failure, replication), i.e. client programs see a system which is similar to a local file system. Behind the scenes, the Distributed FS handles locating files, transporting data, and potentially providing other features listed below.<\/p>\n<p>Distributed File Systems can be categorised in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Distributed File Systems<\/strong>\u00a0are also called network file systems. Many implementations have been made, they are location dependent and they have access control lists (ACLs).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distributed fault-tolerant File Systems<\/strong>\u00a0replicate data between nodes (between servers or servers\/clients) for high availability and offline (disconnected) operation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distributed parallel File Systems<\/strong>\u00a0stripe data over multiple servers for high performance. They are normally used in high-performance computing (HPC).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distributed parallel fault-tolerant File Systems<\/strong>\u00a0stripe and replicate data over multiple servers for high performance and to maintain data integrity. Even if a server fails no data is lost. The file systems are used in both high-performance computing (HPC) and high-availability clusters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The objectives of this research initiative are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Evaluate and compare performance of various Distributed File Systems<\/li>\n<li>Explore and Evaluate the use fo Distributed File Systems as Object Storage<\/li>\n<li>Explore the use of Distributed File Systems in OpenStack<\/li>\n<li>Explore the use of Distributed File Systems in Hadoop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Problem Statement<\/h2>\n<p>With the increasing need and use of cloud storage services providers must be able to deliver a reliable service that is also easily managed.
